The Divided Self
There are many people in prison who should be in a mental hospital and management have not faced up to this reality. The prison staff are not capable of dealing with the insane.
The plaque below the sculpture reads:
The separation from family, community, and society is interwoven with the struggle for personal expression, creativity, and the survival of the spirit in an environment where freedom is denied.
The sculpture, entitled “The Divided Self”, was constructed by students at the Limerick Prison education unit while working under the guidance of sculptor Simon Moller.
