Zeal deficit
I don’t have much to add to the hysteria over the statutory rape laws except to note the contrast in the zeal with which the government pursued pregnant illegal immigrants (a divisive and probably unnecessary constitutional referendum), nursing home residents (attempts to introduce retrospective legislation to legalise government theft of their pensions), and Frank Connolly and the CPI (abuse of Dail privilege, leaking of documents to the press, whatever you’re having yourself), with the laissez-faire approach to closing a loophole in the law that they should have been aware of since at least 2002 (being charitable).
Who’s interests are the government looking out for? Not the old, the sick and the vulnerable, that’s for sure.
