Dereliction

Derelict Ireland

Treasa has previously noted the amount of derelict houses in Ireland. Sometime last year I got the notion of photographing some of them for a project I was putting together. It turned out they didn’t really suit the project so I abandoned them. I’ve put them here for posterity. They’re mostly taken around west Clare and Galway. I may add to them if the mood takes me.

That’s an extraordinary photographic essay Mark. I wish I’d done something similar but somehow, I never quite have the patience to do it.

I particularly like the picture of the blue door - it’s very poignant, with the boots to the left of the door, the broken pane of glass. It’s heartbreaking.

I can still remember some of the houses that I passed in Mayo, which originally put the question of dereliction to the forefront of my mind. However, what strikes me most is that every single time I drive from Dublin to Limerick now, I see even more dereliction, all the dereliction I just never used to notice. Maybe it was a case of see no evil with me. I don’t know.

[…] EDIT: 7 Feb 2007: Mark Waters has done some photographs of dereliction in the west of Ireland. […]
