We are all to blame for the state of the country but some of us are more culpable than others.

Some call for austerity – the government’s preferred option – cuts in spending that will lead to a deflationary spiral. Others call for a stimulus but there’s nothing in the piggy bank. Only in a dream world could we have pro-cyclical government spending policies in the good times followed by counter-cyclical policies in the bad times. And even if we could beg, borrow, or steal, there’s no guarantee that the good money thrown after bad would not just flow right through our sieve of an economy, spent on imported goods.

Polls suggest that the majority want an election in 2010. For what purpose? To start afresh? I don’t think so. What people want is a time machine to transport them back to 2007 so they can vote for the other guy who promised the same thing and maybe this time it’ll all work out. Still searching for the magic beans. We scapegoat the politicians but they gave us what we asked for, we just didn’t think through the consequences of our three wishes.
